7 Home Remedies for Geographic Tongue

Geographic tongue is benign migratory glossitis in which the upper and the sides of the tongue usually appears a map-like irregular, smooth, red areas surrounded by wavy white lines. You may notice it in other areas of your mouth as well.

In the world, about 2-3% of the population suffered from this condition. This condition affects female more than males.

Most of the cases, affected people present no symptom. However, in some cases, you might be annoyed because of mild discomfort or a burning or painful sensation especially when your tongue contacts with hot, spicy, acidic foods, cigarette smoke or toothpaste, and bad breath.

Geographic Tongue

There is no definitive evidence indicates exact causes of geographic tongue. It is believed that the genetics play a certain role in the development of the disorder because of the association between geographic tongue and a condition called fissured tongue. Other findings suggest that geographic tongue has an association with some conditions as psoriasis, allergies, emotional stress, juvenile diabetes, Reiter’s syndrome, and hormonal disturbances.

However, we need more evidence to prove the link. You may not need to require medical treatment for this benign disorder. While simple remedies do help to get rid of geographic tongue.

  1. Sauropus androgynous

Sauropus androgynous is widely known as a good remedy for geographic tongue thanks to its acidic property.

Crush or grind a wisp of Sauropus androgynous, ensuring to wash it before using. Then, filter the juice. Dip medical gauze to the juice and illuminate parts inflamed tongue, two times.

You need to do it gently, not as fast, and hard as it may cause an ulcer wounds. 

  1. Diet considering

Reset daily diet help normalize the tongue state. Take foods that rich in vitamin as eggs, meat, fish, and cheese. Avoiding or limiting that irritates the sensitive tissues of your tongue helps reduce discomfort due to geographic tongue.

All the foods that you should avoid and limit include hot, spicy, acidic, or salty foods; tobacco products; heavily flavored candy or other food products; acidic fruits and vegetables; limit consume too sweet food and processed foods.

  1. Fluid Intake

Hydrated body help you get rid of the discomfort related geographic tongue. Hydration also stimulates body to produce more saliva, which promotes oral health. Increase the consumption of fluid daily or supplement other fruit juice. 

  1. Aloe Vera

Thanks to the anti-inflammatory and healing properties, Aloe Vera is a simple but effective home therapy for not only skin problems but also many oral problems, including the geographic tongue. It also can help you get rid of bad breath.

Apply the Aloe Vera gel extracted from an aloe vera leaf on your tongue. Leave it for 10 minutes then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Reapply a few times daily.

Rinse your mouth with aloe vera juice 2 or 3 times a day.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is good option for fighting off the geographic tongue. It helps maintain your mouth’s natural pH level.

Use 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar mix with one forth of teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water as a mouthwash 2 or 3 times a day. Repeat this remedies until symptoms subside.

  1. Mint

The antibacterial action of mint inhibits the development of bacteria, therefore, helps prevent further progression.

Drink a strong cup of cold mint tea few times a day or chew a few fresh mint leaves daily or use mint-based products as mint gum, toothpaste or mouthwash to see the reduction of discomfort. It also helps prevent many oral problems and get rid of bad breath.

  1. Cinnamon Tea

Cold cinnamon tea is believed that is effective on the patches linked to the geographic tongue turmoil.

Prepare cinnamon tea by mixing cinnamon pieces in hot water for 10 minutes. Then keep the tea under refrigerated provisions. If you are stressful, drink 2-3 glasses of the tea daily.

With the geographic condition, it is very important that you should keep your mouth clean. Besides home remedies, you better rinsing your mouth with lukewarm salt water for at least five times a day. Remember not to eat anything after rising 30 minutes.
